7 Tips for a More Engaging Website

in by Dmitry 15 comments

As we pointed out in our How to Use the Seven Deadly Sins To Turn Visitors Into Customers post, there is a great deal of psychology that goes into making a great website. Unfortunately, very few web designers and developers have much training in or knowledge of psychology. Dr. Susan Weinschenk from Human Factors International recently put together an absolutely phenomenal video illustrating the concepts that drive action on websites. She touches on many points we illustrate in our article on 7 deadly sins:

As a quick summary, here are the points:

  1. Too many choices — the number of choices effects people's purchasing behavior
  2. Social validation — peer reviews play a huge factor in purchasing
  3. Scarcity — items with limited availability seem to be more valuable
  4. Food, Sex and Danger — very powerful instinctual triggers for action
  5. Power of faces — our brains are predisposed to looking at faces
  6. Stories — brains process information best in story form
  7. Commitments — start asking people to make small commitments to your site which grow larger with time

@Lily - haha! No worries. Just felt like a short mention today, it's a great video, Susan does a great job illustrating the points there. Glad you liked the post. Thanks for the comment.

Indeed a great video! Video's are also a great for an engaging website, half the internet is about video's today.

nice made animation, telling something by video is often much more effective then dull words. And the tips are also helpfull.

I suppose they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I just read almost the exact same blog post (except published four days earlier) on another UX blog...

http://www.intuitionhq.com/blog/2011/08/how-to-make-your-website-more-engaging/

Even your title is that same... Come on ZURB, you guys can do better than that.

Bryan (ZURB) says

Bob- pure coincidence as the title isn't all the original (it's derived from the video!).

Couple other points: 1. Not sure if it's implied, but we're not a UX blog ( UXdoesn't exist!). 2. Blogs are commentary, so there will be many more posts with similar information! 3. With the volume of posts we produce I'm sure there will be overlap with the internet.

Great video/animation. It was very easy to understand. I like how you justify your arguments with real statistics/data. Please continue doing these type of animations. They are excellent.
