» Before beginning a sketch you should think about what your goals are.
Doing your sketch:
Economically- means in the fastest, most direct manner possible,
trying to lessen the chance of mistakes.
Accurately- means honest representation of proportions,
choosing the best view, angle, size, media, etc. to present idea
Elegantly- means in your own unique, simple, style, with no preconceived
notion of how it should look.
» Five questionsto ask yourself before beginning an idea/product sketch.
These should all be considered when you are doing thumbnail sketches.
1. How big is it?
What perpective should I use?
How do I indicate scale?
How large does the drawing have to be? Can it be?
2. How complex is it?
How many views do I need?
Can one view adequately describe?
Should I explode it?
3. Which of its features are most important?
Can one view show it all?
Would orthographic views help?
Which elements can I hide?
4. Where/How is it used?
How much Enviornment do I need to show?
What objects can I use to indicate surround?
5. How much time is it worth?
What is the drawing for?
Where is it being shown?
What is life?
