"We all go
through life with an underlying assumption that there's a problem, that somebody has to win
and somebody has to lose." -Benjamin Zander,
Tom Peters interview
I often look at situations as a game trying to identify how to come out on top. This is
capitalism. It is how I survive as a freelancer. I was taught at an early age that if you
work hard at something good things can happen. As I grew older the realization that good
things happen at a cost, whether it be money, time, or emotions. There is a give and take
to every situation.
The end result becomes less important as you realize that in anything you do there is give
and take. I could not survive without the end result of money, but I have to balance out the
cost of getting paid. Process therefore becomes the most important piece. Process keeps me
grounded, focused on the problems at hand, and enjoying the things around me. It keeps things
real.
Maybe I am an idealist, a hopeless romantic, head in the clouds buffoon, but I want to feel
the things around me. I want to absorb my environment and create magic. There are no winners
or losers in this, only players.
