Reflection and Participation.

sunday, march 18, 2001

As I paged through zurb.com I was told that the work in my portfolio fell short of the interaction created in my own site. The design work done for my clients is decent, but still not as compelling. Why? Perhaps time, money and communication add road blocks to solving visual problems for clients. The goal in any project is to get from A to B with as much forward movement as possible. Unfortunately there is not the same time to reflect on the design. Does this make the work bad? No, the value added to a project cannot always be seen in the visuals. Participation is why you get paid, but reflection is what makes ideas shine. Without participation, however, it makes it hard to reflect. Sometimes you just need to push a project forward.

My own site is a constant work in progress- participation and reflection have occurred at spontaneous intervals over a long period of time. My thinking has been challenged, and as a result I grow with the creation. Last week was a time of participation in life. I had lots of stressful moments both good and bad, neither of which compelled me to write. It bothered me that I left these pages empty, but I came to the conclusion that being a participant in life is ok. Good ideas can come from this as well- you just may not be able to see them.

Today Arastedero Park blew a little breeze through my clear head. Tomorrow I might need a q-tip.
